ABOUT WCIC
In 2004 Yveline
Ntanfa, a Cameroonian lawyer and women's rights advocate, had the opportunity
to visit Dannerhuset, a local women's centre and shelter for battered
women in Copenhagen, Denmark. The visit proved to be a significant first
step in the realization of WCIC.
For two years Mrs.
Ntanfa and Dannerhuset
worked together in order to make grounds for establishing a very
much-needed initiative intended to assist the many women in Cameroon,
and ultimately West Africa, in their struggle to obtain a life free
from the only too common assaults on their basic human rights.
Drawing upon the
experience of ITUL, a Danish organisation already working in Cameroon,
and the Cameroonian organisation KOSA, Mrs. Ntanfa and Dannerhuset succeeded
in getting funding for a two-year-period from Projektrådgivningen
supported by the Danish International Development Agency (Danida).
May the 18th 2006
Mrs. Ntanfa and her colleagues from The Women's Lawyers Association
of Douala, Cameroon, was able to officially declare WCIC for open!

President of WCIC
Yveline Ntanfa and former Chairwoman of RAW Kari Helene Partapuoli
The centre is situated
in a residential area in Douala, Cameroon. From here the people of WCIC
provide face-to-face counselling and educational programmes for women,
reaching out to both urban and rural areas of Cameroon. Based on the
initial experiences the aim of WCIC is to become a strong voice to be
reckoned with in the battle for women's rights not only in Cameroon,
but also in Western Africa as such.
It is not an easy
task WCIC has embarked on, but a necessary one if we want to pave the
ground for a more dignified life for women in Africa.
Your
support will be greatly appreciated!
